Background on
Focus Learning Systems
Focus Learning Systems
was established in 2006 with the desire to help individuals
with learning difficulties. In 2002 James Howe, owner,
discovered the Play Attention system while reading an
investors magazine. Having a child that struggled with ADHD
he purchased a home system and used the program. His child
made such progress that James Howe became interested in
using this program on others in Oklahoma.
From the years 1999-2006 Kathryn Wood ,education director,
taught special education in Oklahoma. She has experience
working with individuals that have ADD/ADHD, learning
disability, emotional disabilities, and mentally
handicapped. Her goal was to help all students reach their
full potential. After 7 years in the classroom she decided a
change was needed and Focus Learning was that change.
During the 2006-2007 school year Kathryn Wood worked with
Dickson Public Schools on a pilot program using
Play Attention.
On average we saw 21 students. When school ended we were
more than half-way through the
Play Attention
program and the parents, the school as well as
Focus Learning Systems
saw significant improvements with the students. Students
increased grades, decreased visits to principals office, had
less time in detention and suspension, increased test
scores, decreased homework time, decreased impulsive
behaviors, and an overall increase of time-on-task. Our
results with Dickson followed along with the scientific
findings of Play Attention.
The program was a success.
The school year 2007-2008 Focus Learning started introducing
our program and services to schools. In March 2008 we opened
our first learning center in Davis, OK. For the small area
of Davis we are serving over 10 families. We have had
interest from parents in the Oklahoma City area and all
areas of southern Oklahoma. Some make the trip to our office
as often as they can.
In June 2009 a
second Learning Center opened in Southlake, TX. We are
excited about this new chapter in our history. The Southlake
office is a wonderful addition to the Focus Learning family.
In the future we have a desire open other Learning Centers
in the Oklahoma and Texas area.
Our desire is to
work with children and adults and give them the skills to
compete in the work place and secede in the school systems.
All children and adults can learn, some just learn
differently.
